Mini-Collection of Jackets

This final part of my MA project sought to apply gained results (a range of embroidered samples) to a physical and/ or digital product. The primary inspiration for the design development became the international Russian immigrants community, that is strongly opposed to the current regime in the homeland.

There was an attempt to interpret the White-Blue-White flag as the symbol of national resistance. Thus, the mini-collection of jackets with embroidered collars in a white-blue color palette suggests the alternative approach to preserving national and expressing the present agenda.

A Personal Challenge

This part of the project is a big personal challenge. I’m an experienced sewer, but have a very limited knowledge about garment construction from scratch. So, the first part of the challenge was using draping as a fastest way to physically visualize my fashion ideas.
Another challenge was creating a digital collection of garments in and solving two major tasks: visualize garment and create a pattern for the further .

The Concept

When I’ve been doing rough sketches, I saw those women brutally captured, beaten, humiliated by both police and by the public, who said that Russians don’t even try to fight back.
The primary thought I’ve had in mind: I want to protect them. But I’m only an embroidery artist and a product designer, not a superhero. And the symbolic protection is the only option that I can give. So, to me, this project was not about fashion, but about designing the suit of armor.

Color Palette

The Flag of the Wonderful Russia of the Future.
There is no exact color matching regarding to blue tint. In some sources, there is a statement that this is people’s flag. So we are welcome to interpret the color until it is recognized as a white-blue-white pattern. In other sources, I found the description of Azure color for a flag. But such recommendations are more for people who want to print the symbols for rallies.
To me, such openness gives the opportunity to play with the blue color for my outcome.

The Style Board

The style board highlights the range of idea that I aimed to cover in the project, such as creating statement trough a garment, following current trends, freely interpreting national heritage, developing symbolic armor.
