Professional Practice

The professional practice of embroidery artist and educator Ksenia Semirova spans commissions, restoration, costume, creative collaborations, exhibitions and teaching.

Fashion and Bridal Embroidery

Ksenia creates bespoke hand embroidery for garments, bridalwear and accessories, collaborating with private clients and ateliers. Her practice combines original design, material sampling and embroidery.

Commissions include a four-metre wedding veil with an original floral design, or a series of personalised scarf monograms inspired by Scottish knotwork, and many more.

Alongside commissioned pieces, she develops her own embroidered garments.

Embroidery Restoration and Garment Alterations

Ksenia’s experience includes restoring embroidery and altering embellished garments, from vintage couture to contemporary beaded dresses. Each piece requires close attention to its original construction, the condition of the fabric and the way its embellishments are attached.

Projects include restoring bead embellishment on a 1980s Givenchy silk organza gown with black velvet flowers, using natural threads to respect the original materials. Her work also includes alterations to a fully beaded Clio Peppiatt mini dress, where changes to the garment require careful handling of both the mesh base and its beadwork.

Historical Dress Reconstruction and Costume Embroidery

Historical dress and embroidery are recurring subjects in Ksenia’s practice. Her MA Textiles research at the University of Brighton explored traditional Russian pearl setting and its application in contemporary clothing. This interest in historical materials and construction also informs her costume embroidery and interpretation of visual references.

Her reconstruction and costume embroidery work includes commissions for the film industry and private cosplay clients.

Creative Collaborations

Ksenia collaborates with artists and designers to explore how hand embroidery can interact with other materials and disciplines. Shared research and experimentation are central to these projects, with the properties of each material influencing the finished design.

For Crossing Crafts 2026, she collaborated with glass artist Naomi Jacques on To the Moon and Back, a pair of statement necklaces combining traditional pearl setting with handmade dichroic glass. Inspired by lunar imagery and historical jewellery from the Russian North, the pieces were exhibited at the National Trust’s Ickworth Estate as part of the Suffolk Craft Society Summer Show.

Exhibitions and Awards

Ksenia’s hand embroidery and textile art have been exhibited across the UK and internationally. Selected venues include Ditchling Museum of Art + Craft, Hub Sleaford, SoShiro in London and the Landmark Arts Centre. Her exhibition practice encompasses embroidered wall pieces, sculptural textiles and wearable art, exploring the relationship between traditional craft and contemporary subjects.

Recognition includes the Evening Wear Award at The Stitch Festival in London in 2023 and a Talent Prize in Teravarna’s FLOWER international juried art competition.

Embroidery Teaching, Talks and Demonstrations

Ksenia teaches hand embroidery through online courses, live workshops and private tuition in London. Through her platform, Embellishment.Design, she develops practical projects that guide students from their first stitches to finished pieces, with opportunities for feedback and individual support. Her teaching includes Lunéville embroidery and textile techniques, drawing on her own research and professional practice.

Her teaching and speaking engagements include workshops for private events and local embroidery clubs, an artist talk at Hub Sleaford and embroidery demonstrations at SoShiro. She has also participated in Sussex Craft Week and London Design Festival, sharing the processes and ideas behind her work with wider audiences.
