My new Rose Jumpsuit course is now open.

The course grew from my Rose Jumpsuit project, inspired by the extraordinary rose decoration of Schiaparelli’s 1937 evening coat created in collaboration with Jean Cocteau. I wasn’t interested in reproducing the original coat. Instead, I wanted to take the idea of oversized roses spreading across a garment and translate it into something contemporary, dimensional and wearable.

The result was my black denim jumpsuit covered with handmade textile roses and embroidered leaves — and the entire embellishment process has now become an online course.

What the Rose Jumpsuit course is about

This is not a sewing course for making the jumpsuit itself. The focus is the textile embellishment: how the roses are created, how the leaves are embroidered and, importantly, how all the individual elements are brought together as one composition on a garment.

I show the full process of making the dimensional roses, from preparing the base and cutting the chiffon petals to gathering, assembling, steaming and shaping the finished flowers.

The second part of the project is dedicated to the leaves. I explain how I prepare the mesh, transfer the leaf shapes and embroider them using several shades of thread to create depth and variation.

The course also follows the process of arranging the roses and leaves on the garment. Composition is a major part of this project: the flowers need to relate to the shape of the clothing rather than simply being attached individually.

More than one jumpsuit

Although the course follows the making of my Rose Jumpsuit, the techniques are not limited to this particular garment.

The same approach can be adapted to a jacket, blouse, dress or another piece of clothing. You can change the number of roses, their scale, colours and placement, and develop a completely different composition using the same techniques.

That is one of the things I wanted this course to offer: not simply instructions for reproducing my finished piece, but a practical method that can become the starting point for your own textile embellishment projects.
