Lady Slipper Gold

“Lady Slipper Gold,” a distinguished piece from the Tropical Garden Series, captures the elegance of hand embroidery through a creative reimagining of floral form. With a unique shape for the slipper and extended side petals, the design brings a fresh perspective to botanical art. This intricate work combines two ancient techniques—cord setting and covering—enhanced by hand-dyed cords in subtle tones and a careful arrangement of beads. Golden foil and lace add richness, creating a textured surface that plays with light and adds depth. “Lady Slipper Gold” harmoniously blends traditional embroidery with contemporary materials, inviting viewers to experience nature’s beauty through a modern, sophisticated lens.

One of 2023 trends

Gold is one of the trendy colors for 2023, or, better to say, it is an ongoing trend. This is the key reason for making a panel in monochrome gold.

For this panel, I carried on to experiment with the form of flower and made an alternative shape for the slipper part. Also, I significantly altered the length of side petals.

Above all, I continued my creative experiments with both cord sitting technique and materials mixing.

Mixing flat and voluminous

The whole composition consists of various hand-embroidered elements: the large stumpwork orchid in the center is flanked by a range of segments made of tambour (Luneville) and techniques.

Interpreting Creatively

In the composition, two ancient pearl embroidery techniques – cord sitting and covering – were interpreted through playing with cord color (hand-dyed with acrylic paint) and beads.

Additionally, the composition includes the experiment with golden foil and lace. The purpose of the experiment is getting textured textile surface covered by foil.

Combining materials

The orchid is a mix of four different metal threads with natural silk yarn accents.

For the flat segments, there were used flat (4mm), square (4mm) and cup (6mm) sequins, raffia, brocade fabric, metallic braided cord, lace and mesh.
