Believe at “Prayers for Peace”
My wall panel Believe has been selected for “Prayers for Peace”, the Winter Season exhibition at Water Street Gallery
in Todmorden. The show invites artists to respond to a moment in which the human spirit is being tested, through works that bring reflection, hope, and renewal.
Curated as an open and inclusive exhibition, Prayers for Peace welcomes painting, drawing, print, sculpture, textiles, and lens-based media. The invited themes—harmony, sacred geometry, reconciliation, stillness, and the divine — encourage artists to explore contrasts such as chaos and order, suffering and solace, despair and transcendence.
Within this context, Believe is embroidered in contemporary Vyaz script, forming a cross at the centre of the panel. The lettering is raised using goldwork and tambour techniques over metal-coated textiles, outlined with cord, and embellished with crystals and stones. The symmetrical structure recalls the geometry of Byzantine crosses, while the contrast of black and gold symbolises a passage from darkness to light.
Created between two personal turning points — when belief was lost and when it returned — the work reflects a reconnection with cultural and spiritual heritage. Presented as part of Prayers for Peace, it offers a quiet meditation on faith, resilience, and renewal through the language of embroidery.
